What is Education for Business and Economics?

Designing teaching and learning in a commercial environment

Education for Business and Economics combines business, economic, and educational science content. This subject focuses on how commercial content is taught and learned. In this context, business education deals primarily with education at vocational schools, but also with continuing education, for example within companies.

In the field of educational science you will deal with teaching and learning from the perspective of educational psychology. You will learn about the unique aspects of teaching commercial content from a subject didactic perspective, how to design in-company training or vocational school teaching, and how to research these processes.

On the other hand, the economic part provides you with sound knowledge of business administration and economics. The focus is on controlling, marketing, purchasing, and sales within companies and on macroeconomic relationships beyond companies. The program also covers relevant content from business information systems and law.

You deal with the following questions, among others:

  • What are the methods for fair assessment of students?
  • How can teachers convey complex content in an interesting and motivating way?
  • What background does a teacher need to create good lessons?
  • What is learning and how do people learn?
  • How can scientific findings related to teaching and learning be implemented in schools and workplaces?
  • What makes for good teaching? How do I plan lessons?

Since business education is an interdisciplinary field, the program also delves into other subject areas. Mathematics and statistics are a particularly important part of the content. Both economic and business decisions and business education research methods are based on data and numbers. That's why you learn how to handle this data correctly during your studies.

As a Bachelor of Business Education, you will be able to analyze business education issues and develop didactically appropriate solutions. For example, as an educator, you develop vocational teaching and learning formats, either in a business context or for school lessons. Perhaps you also want to investigate the implementation and evaluation of such formats.

Curriculum

Well-founded basics, individual specialization

In the first three semesters, you will gain broad basic knowledge in the areas of business administration, economics, education, and law. In addition, you will study the mathematical and statistical methods that you need to analyze and solve problems in business education.

Equipped with this knowledge, you will enhance your professional profile from the 4th semester onwards by choosing one of the following two elective areas.

In the elective area for a business profile, the focus is on the field of human resource management. This is about the employees in companies and thus about a central business resource. Identifying and attracting suitable new employees is only one aspect of this elective – strategic personnel and organizational development is another. Labor law and ethics also play a role.

In the elective area for a school profile, you prepare for teaching at vocational schools and lay the foundation for the subsequent Master's program, which is a prerequisite for working as a teacher. For this, you need to acquire knowledge in a second subject. At this point, it is important to note that you will only be able to teach the subject in question later on if you also take it in your Master's program. Some subjects are offered in cooperation with the University of Stuttgart. You can find detailed information in the curriculum. You are not interested in human resource management, but you still want to work in business later on? This career path is also possible with the choice of the school profile. Here, the specializations of accounting or information systems are particularly suitable.

You can choose from the following specializations:

  • Accounting
  • Information Systems
  • History and Political Science
  • Catholic Theology
  • Protestant Theology
  • German
  • English
  • Sports
  • Mathematics

Two internships are also scheduled during the advanced phase of the program. Regardless of which profile you choose, you will complete both a school-based and a company-based internship.

Between the 5th and 6th semesters, you will complete a 4-week school internship at a commercial vocational school. The goal of the internship is to apply the professional and didactic skills that you have acquired in the basic phase of your studies. During this internship, you will observe experienced teachers and also conduct your first, self-planned lessons. Seminars are held in the 5th and 6th semesters to prepare for and follow up on the internship.

In addition, you are to complete a minimum of 9 weeks of practical training in a company. The aim is to learn about business activities in practice and to give you a better idea as to what interesting jobs there might be for you in the business world. You are flexible in the implementation of the company internship. You can integrate it individually into your study plan. The only important thing is that you complete it before you start your Bachelor’s thesis.
At the end of your studies you will write a Bachelor’s thesis for which you will receive 12 credits. With the Bachelor’s thesis you show that you can apply the business education, economic, and methodological skills from your studies to a concrete scientific problem.

Practical elements during your studies

Practice must be experienced – study in a hands-on program!

In order to be successful in your future profession, it is important to be able to apply the knowledge you have learned in practice. Even though universities tend to focus on imparting theoretical knowledge and the latest research results, we do not neglect practical relevance.

Gain practical experience

Internships give you an insight into everyday working life in schools and companies and help you get an idea of what you might like to do later. For the first job after graduation, internships are also important door openers and accelerate the application process. In the Education for Business and Economics program, you will gain experience in two places: in the corporate environment with a 9-week internship and in the school environment during a 4-week school internship. In this way, you will gain valuable insights into both career options.

Expand skills

Especially if you work with people on a daily basis, soft skills are essential for your future career. You can strengthen and expand these personal, social, and methodological skills as part of our continuing education program. For example, we offer you courses on the following topics: Learning and working techniques, language skills, project management, communication and presentation techniques, IT and media skills, and personality development. This way you can improve these skills during your studies in an uncomplicated and cost-effective way.

Learning through hands-on work

People who put the technical and methodological knowledge from their studies into practice every day become experts at it. We therefore work with lecturers and guest speakers from the business world who provide you with first-hand practical knowledge. At the same time, you can make contacts for later internships.

Learn languages, understand cultures

It is never so easy to broaden one's horizons as during a semester abroad. That is why we recommend you to use this option if you can. You will benefit from international experience and cultural exchange while improving your language skills. This knowledge is of great importance in today's world, especially for international companies. With over 80 partner universities in Europe and around the world, you are sure to find one that’s right for you!

Gain experience with start-ups

In the "Innovation Greenhouse" everything revolves around sustainable business start-ups: From idea development and evaluation to start-up and subsequent growth of the company, here you will have the opportunity to either work on an exciting start-up, or receive support for your own ideas or start-up company.

Research during your studies

Research projects are a wonderful opportunity to apply learned methods and skills in practice, to test your own ideas, and to find solutions to problems. In the project “Humboldt reloaded,” you will go through all stages of a real research project, from the preparation of the current state of research and the selection of methods for your own research to data analysis and presentation.

We also integrate current research projects into the teaching and ensure that you get an insight into research concentrations in this way. As a research assistant and in the context of your Bachelor’s thesis, you can also actively participate in projects of the institute.

Stay abroad

Studying internationally

With a stay abroad you gain life experience, intercultural skills, and improve your career opportunities at home and abroad. There are many opportunities for you to do this as part of your Bachelor's degree: You can spend a semester abroad in Europe or overseas, do an internship abroad, or attend a summer school during the semester break.

Both the Dean’s Office of the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences and the University’s Office of International Affairs are happy to advise you on all matters related to your stay abroad. Both offices can help you with organizing and carrying out stays abroad.
