Vice President for Digitalization

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Alexander Schaum, Vice President for Digitalization at the University of Hohenheim

CV

Alexander Schaum completed his studies in Engineering Cybernetics at the University of Stuttgart in 2006 and earned his Ph.D. in Control Engineering in 2009 from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, UNAM) in Mexico City. From 2009 to 2010, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Engineering Sciences at UNAM, and from 2010 to 2011 in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) in Iztapalapa, Mexico City. From 2011 to 2014, he was a visiting professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science at UAM Cuajimalpa, also in Mexico City. Starting in 2014, he worked as a senior research associate at the Chair of Automation and Control Engineering at Christian-Albrechts-Universität (CAU) in Kiel, Germany, where he completed his habilitation in control engineering and control theory in 2020. In the winter semester of 2018, he served as interim professor for the Chair of Networked Electronic Systems, and in the summer semester of 2023 for the Chair of Automation and Control Engineering, both at CAU. Since September 2023, he is the head of the Department of Process Analytics at the University of Hohenheim.

He is a member of the IEEE Control Systems Society (CSS) and its Conference Editorial Board (CEB), Technology Conference Editorial Board (TCEB), and Technical Committee (TC) on Distributed-Parameter Systems, as well as the corresponding TC of the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC). His research focuses on the design of networked sensor and actuator systems, with a particular emphasis on the development of state observers and model-based controllers for nonlinear, finite- and infinite-dimensional, stochastic, and networked systems with applications in various areas of process control, particularly in food and bioprocess engineering.
