Program in May

Topic of the month:

Cattle, Pigs, and Chickens - Animal husbandry of the future

In times of climate change and a growing world population, animal husbandry is under particular scrutiny. Research contributes to optimizing husbandry conditions and nutrition and thus, for example, to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This is not only good for the bioeconomy, but is also done for the welfare of animals.
Off-topic events complement the thematic focus.

Unless otherwise noted, all events are held in German.

Event in the Sustainability Weeks 2020: The web-seminar by Prof. Dr. Volker Wulfmeyer kicks off the topic of climate change. In his web-seminar, he will not only highlight the current state of research on the climate crisis, but also refer to the current Covid-19 situation. After an input lecture, there will be room for questions on these topics. More information

Speaker: Prof. Dr. Volker Wulfmeyer, University of Hohenheim

One thing that few people think about when it comes to sustainability is money. Because money has an effect. Whether it is a lot or a little, it finances certain industries and projects. The session by Tomorrow, the sustainable Fintech from Hamburg, shows how this works and how everyone can make a big difference. The event will also focus on zebras, unicorns, and how business can contribute to a better tomorrow.

It will be held as a Zoom Meeting and streamed on YouTube. More information

313 kilograms of edible food ends up in a garbage can per second in Germany. That's three full trash cans. Foodsharing is a 2012 initiative against food waste, which saves overproduced and unwanted food from the bin and distributes it free of charge to interested parties, the needy and organizations. The aim is to increase appreciation for food, sensitize people to the issue, and actively campaign against the waste of resources. Foodsharing also sees itself as an educational policy movement committed to the sustainable environmental and consumption goals of the United Nations. Use instead of wasting. Communal, sustainable, and respectful. The event will take place as a Zoom meeting.

The importance of this topic is made clear in the context of the bioeconomy. Mycelium-based materials can be used in many different ways in the fields of: Construction and materials, packaging, textiles, design, etc. A brief overview of current product developments, process engineering, and current research into material properties is given. The fungi used can process a wide range of substrates as natural destructors of lignocellulose, with the mycelium acting as a binder between particles. They offer ecological alternatives, especially for petro-chemical foams, and also offer completely new applications, which will be discussed in the lecture.

Speaker: Dr. Johannes Krümpel, State Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioenergy

Event in the Sustainability Weeks 2020: The colonial era ended, according to popular belief, at the end of the 1960s, when most colonized nations became independent. Just this year, 17 African countries are celebrating 60 years of independence. The 17 goals for sustainable development adopted by the United Nations in 2015 are to be achieved by 2030 or within 10 years. However, the colonial era has left an unforgettable and critical legacy that does not make sustainable development or cooperation easy. Every sustainable goal brings with it its colonial history or colonial heritage, which must be reappraised. Colonial and racist resentment is a recurrent theme in the struggle for sustainability.

Speaker: Mariette Nicole Afi Amoussou, Consultant & Trainer for Development Education, 1st Chairman of the board of the association Meine Welt e.V. and specialist promoter for migration and development in Rhineland-Palatinate.

The event will take place as a Zoom meeting. Further information on participation is available by email after registration. More information

In the project "Pig farming fit for the animal welfare label - Integrated development of housing and process technology for the transformation of conventional stables (Label-Fit)," research is being conducted into how the requirements of the German Animal Welfare Association's animal welfare label "For more animal welfare" can be integrated into conventional pig farming systems. One requirement is the provision of a closed resting area for fattening pigs. Different approaches such as floor cooling, bay structures, or light guidance were investigated. In the course of the lecture, the most important findings will be presented.

Changes in rainfall patterns, long periods of drought, and heat waves are just some of the drastic effects of man-made climate change. Further increasing greenhouse gas emissions and unchecked species decline show the necessity of a reorientation and transformation of our economic system and its foundations: away from a form based on fossil resources and towards a sustainable, bio-based economy - the bioeconomy. The basic idea of the bioeconomy is to use knowledge about biological systems in a meaningful way in order to do business in an ecological way. Already today, more and more bio-based materials can replace conventional petroleum-based products. On the occasion of the "Science Year 2020 - Bioeconomy," experts from different disciplines will discuss a bio-based future in the Colloquium Fundamentale. These experts include Prof. Dr. Iris Lewandowski, Chief Bioeconomy Officer and Head of the Department of Biobased Products and Energy Crops at the University of Hohenheim.
