Program in March

Topic of the month:

Conserving resources - Recycling management and economic development

The bioeconomy aims to use existing resources sustainably and efficiently. Closed-loop recycling management creates the opportunity for this: because it means that all products and raw materials remain in use for as long as possible. For example, it makes sense to recycle the finite resource phosphorus - an important nutrient for humans, animals, and plants - or to withdraw as much climate-active carbon as possible from the cycle.
Off-topic events complement the thematic focus.

Unless otherwise noted, all events are held in German.

In the face of climate change, peatland rewetting is coming into focus, not only to secure habitats for rare animal and plant species, but also as a necessary contribution to solving the climate problem. However, continuing to use the land at high water levels represents a paradigm shift in peatland use and requires completely new concepts, cultures, and technology. Therefore, new alternative uses that can cope with the wet soil are in demand - paludicultures. How can this biomass be used? What are the markets? Which ones could be adapted and established for reeds, sedges, bulrushes, or peat moss? The event will provide an overview of the possibilities for the utilization of biomass from wet moors in a practical manner with presentations from sample farms and a market of possibilities to engage in intensive discussions with experts and operators.

A lecture at the information event "Utilization possibilities of biomass from wet moors: practical examples" for farmers, land owners, associations, administration, land agencies, companies, and investors with lectures and stands.

Young researchers from the field of agricultural engineering in Hohenheim will use lectures and experiments to show how the bioeconomy can function using new technologies in rural areas. By-products from agriculture are turned into fertilizer, energy, and new materials for the bioeconomy. This event focuses on the role of phosphorus and nitrogen compounds, which can be considered as valuable resources on the one hand, and as potential environmental pollutants on the other, and which deserve attention in any bioeconomy concept.
