Stop 7: Monopteros

When the garden was expanded in 2001, the monopteros was built to serve as a dominant observation point and the visual center of the new garden.

The classical Greek round temple was a popular Arcadian motif in the English gardens of the 18th century. They were dedicated to Apollo or the Genius loci. In Hohenheim there was also such a Monopteros scene.

In reference to the historical model, the architect H.D. Schaal designed a double ring of pillars as a crown for the observation hill in the expansion of the garden between 1996 and 2000.

From here, one can see over the Körschtal to the Scharnhäuser Park, where there is a counterpart of the Monopteros: a “Love Temple” that Duke Carl Eugen had erected together with the small palace “CaroloOtio,” that is, Carl for the muse.

Originally at the bottom of the valley, the small temple was transported up the hill in 1822 by King William I because it was in the way of expanding the royal stables.
