Stop 6: Botanical System

The systematic department of the Hohenheim Botanical Garden features some 4,000 different plant species - sorted by orders and families - to illustrate the relationships within the plant kingdom.

Besides the relationships, the phylogeny of the flowering plants is shown. This leads to a fan-like display. At the rivet of the fan are plant families with many original characteristics, at the upper edge those with derived characteristics. On one side of the main path are dicotyledonous plants, starting with magnolias and buttercups up to the highly developed composites.

On the other side of the main path are the monocotyledonous plants, for example lilies and grasses. A more detailed map can be found by the magnolia and buttercup plants at the base of the fan. Signs next to the individual plants describe the family, name, and heritage.

Various plant forms are represented: from trees and shrubs to perennials, bulbous plants, and tuber plants. Succulents, swamp, and water plants up to the short-lived annuals. The seed yield and seed exchange with other botanical gardens is an important aid in maintaining and expanding the system.
