Stop 5: Three Pillars of Thundering Jupiter

The three pillars of thundering Jupiter were rebuilt on a scale of 1:4 after the ruins of the Temple of Jupiter on the Roman Forum in Rome. Originally, the three pillars were fitted with capitals, carrying an architrave with a triglyph frieze.

Today, only the shaft of the East pillar is still standing. The others lie on the ground in ruins. This scene supposedly inspired Ludwig Uhland to compose his ballad “Des Sängers Fluch” in the summer of 1814:

“Only one high pillar
attests the lost splendor,
even this, already cracked,
could fall overnight.”
