The aim of the subproject is to investigate dryers for chamomile, melissa and valerian and to optimise their equipment and performance rapidly and sustainable. Improvements in performance may include the drying equipment, as well as the control system and mode of operation. Furthermore basic research for the drying behaviour will be carried out on the laboratory dryer.
The dryers will be evaluated at the beginning of the harvest period with respect to fluid- and thermodynamic performance, throughput, homogeneity, quality and energy consumption. The most favourable starting points for the improvement will be chosen and the operator will be advised regarding any technical changes. The impact of the changes will be evaluated during the harvest season. Reconstructions and modifications will be carried out during the winter break. In the second and third year, measurement will be taken to validate the effects of thereconstructions. The basic research will focus on the sorption isotherms, drying behaviour and quality changes during drying.
