Stays Abroad

Financing options

A stay abroad always depends on the financing. So it is worth considering how to fund a stay abroad at an early stage. We present your main financing options here:

International BAföG | Educational loans | Grants and scholarships

International BAföG (Auslands-BAföG)

The Federal Student Financing Act (BAföG) regulates state support for education, including for students. The abbreviation BAföG is often used to refer to the actual financial support provided under the legislation.

What is International BAföG?

Students (Bachelor’s, Master’s or equivalent) can apply for the so-called International BAföG. Because of the higher costs associated with doing part of your studies abroad (increased living costs, travel expenses and tuition fees), different approval guidelines apply for the International BAföG than for the BAföG in Germany.

On top of the usual support received in Germany, the International BAföG can include supplements for higher living costs, travel expenses and foreign health insurance costs.

Where can I apply for my International BAföG?

Depending on the destination country, different BAföG offices are responsible for the International BAföG.

Educational loan

With the federal government’s educational loan, students in advanced semesters can obtain a low-interest loan from the KfW bank to finance a stay abroad (for example), regardless of their income or assets.

Grants and scholarships

Numerous grants and scholarships are available to support student stays abroad. Below you will find a list of grants and scholarships for stays abroad which are awarded by the University of Hohenheim or the University of Hohenheim together with the respective third-party funder.

Other grant and scholarship programs

Besides the grant and scholarship programs at the University of Hohenheim, there are numerous other programs for funding stays abroad from a wide range of grant and scholarship providers (cities, foundations, associations, churches, non-profit organizations, private sponsors, etc.) Various grant and scholarship databases in the internet (e.g. DAAD grant and scholarship database) can make it easier to search for grants and scholarships. The Office of International Affairs (AA) also advertises numerous grants and scholarships on its news & bulletins page (on the University of Hohenheim intranet).
