What are business administration and economics

Understanding how business and economics concepts fit into the big picture

The two fields of business administration (German: BWL) and economics (German: VWL) cover the entire range of economic processes. The focus is on how companies, countries, or households plan and manage their available resources in the best possible way. Business administration deals with organizational, planning, and financial decisions of individual companies. Economics, on the other hand, focuses on the macroeconomic relationships in terms of markets, countries or the world economy.

In addition to the basics of business administration and economics, at the University of Hohenheim you will also acquire specialist knowledge in the fields of social sciences, law, and business information systems.

You will deal with the following questions, among others: How do markets evolve in the face of government intervention or restrictions? How can you ensure that a new product is successful in the market? Which employees are needed in the company and how can they be motivated?

Decisions in the economic and entrepreneurial field are usually based on facts in the form of data and figures. You therefore need to learn to calculate and interpret them correctly. The subjects mathematics and statistics therefore also form an important basis of the program.

Practical elements during your studies

No university can teach you real practice - practice must be experienced!

In order to be successful in your future profession, it is important to be able to apply the knowledge you have learned in practice. Even though universities tend to focus on imparting theoretical knowledge and the latest research results, we do not neglect practical relevance.

Gain practical experience

You can gain initial work experience and orientation in the professional world through internships or student jobs during your studies. They offer you the opportunity to gain initial insights into companies and possible fields of activity. At the University of Hohenheim, you have the option of integrating an internship into your studies in the free elective area or you can take an internship semester. Regardless of which of the two options you choose, the time investment is worth it to make it easier for you to start your career later on.

Expand competences

In today’s business world, so-called soft skills, i.e. personal, social, and methodological competences, also play an increasingly important role. In addition to specialist knowledge, we therefore focus on comprehensive training programs. For example, we offer you courses on the following topics: Language skills, project management, communication and presentation techniques, IT and media skills, personal development, and techniques for studying and working. This way you can improve these skills during your studies in an uncomplicated and cost-effective way.

Learning from practice

We maintain close contacts with the business community and regularly invite lecturers and guest speakers from the corporate world. Here you will learn how the contents and theories taught are implemented and applied in business practice. At the same time, you can make valuable contacts, as companies like to advertise internships at these events.

Learn languages, understand cultures

Explore the world and new countries by spending a semester abroad or participating in the double or triple Bachelor's program. You will not only benefit from international experience and a cultural exchange, but you can also improve your language skills at the same time. This knowledge is of great importance in today's world, especially for international companies. With over 80 partner universities in Europe and around the world, you are sure to find one that’s right for you!

Gain experience with start-ups

In the "Innovation Greenhouse" everything revolves around sustainable business start-ups: From idea development and evaluation to start-up and subsequent growth of the company, here you will have the opportunity to either work on an exciting start-up, or receive support for your own ideas or start-up company.

Research during your studies

Research projects are a wonderful opportunity to apply learned methods and skills in practice, to test your own ideas, and to find solutions to problems. In the project “Humboldt reloaded,” you will go through all stages of a real research project, from the preparation of the current state of research and the selection of methods for your own research to data analysis and presentation.

Stay abroad

Studying internationally

With a stay abroad you gain life experience, intercultural skills, and improve your career opportunities at home and abroad. There are many opportunities for you to do this as part of your Bachelor's degree: You can spend a semester abroad in Europe or overseas, do an internship abroad, or attend a summer school during the semester break.

If you are particularly committed and enthusiastic about languages, you can even make your entire studies international with a bi- or tri-national multiple degree. In return, you will spend part of your studies at our European partner universities and earn multiple degrees in one study program. During your studies, you can take language courses offered by the university to prepare you for your stay abroad.

To qualify for multiple degrees, you will need proof of French and partial English language proficiency when you apply, which you upload to our application portal. You simply apply online to the Bachelor of Business Administration and select a multiple degree option if interested:
