Severity classification of animal experiments

How stressful an experiment is for an animal is defined in EU Directive 2010/63/EU, Annex VIII “Severity Classification of Procedures” and illustrates the criteria with practical examples.

For each animal experiment, the degree of stress is determined by:

• Initial assessment of the person filing the request
• Review and statement by the Animal Welfare Officer
• Statement by the Regional Council’s Ethics Commission
• Decision by the Regional Council
