Responsibilities of the Senate

The Senate decides on matters of research, artistic practice, artistic development projects, teaching, studies, dual training, and further education, unless these are assigned by law to another central body, faculties, or academies.

Its tasks and composition are regulated in accordance with Sec. 19 of the State Higher Education Act (Landeshochschulgesetz, LHG).

The duties of the Senate include:

  • Electing full-time members of the President’s Office together with the University Council
  • Electing the part-time members of the President’s Office
  • Approving the Structural and Development Plan
  • Giving statement on budget drafts or the financial plan
  • Giving statement on conclusion of university agreements and goal agreements
  • Giving statement on the job description of posts for professors; the statement is not required if it is in accordance with the adopted structural and development plan
  • Making decisions relating to the establishment, modification, and cancellation of courses, university institutions, departments, joint institutions, and commissions
  • Making decisions relating to setting admission numbers
  • Adopting resolutions based on proposals from the faculties or the study academies based on recommendations by the expert commissions on the statutes for university examinations; or statement on examination regulations by which a university degree is completed, at the DHBW also the regulations on the contents of studies and the training guidelines as well as on aptitude requirements and procedures for approving training institutions
  • Passing resolutions on statutes, in particular for the administration and use of university institutions, including fees and charges, for elections, and on the entrance examinations, allocation of academic years, admission, enrollment, leave of absence, and exmatriculation of students
  • Adopting resolutions on the University Charter and its amendments
  • Decisions of fundamental importance in questions of artistic practice, artistic development projects, research, the promotion of early career researchers and artists, as well as technology transfer
  • Discussing the President's annual report in a joint meeting with the University Council
  • Discussing the Gender Equality Representative’s annual report
  • Discussing the interim report on the gender equality plan
