Our tip: Apply for a study place at the University of Hohenheim before starting or during your service.
If your application is successful, you can then officially inform the University that you won't be accepting it in order to perform your voluntary service. Your application will then be given higher priority.

An academic year is always divided into a summer semester (April 1 - September 30) and a winter semester (October 1 - March 31).

However, the courses do not take place throughout the whole semester.

In the winter semester, the lecture period usually starts in mid-October and ends at the beginning of February. Oftentimes there are introductory events in the week before the beginning of the lecture period, for new students.

Here you can find a detailed overview of the semester dates of the following years:

The waiting period is always calculated in semesters. The entire time that has passed since you completed your higher education entrance qualification is counted as a waiting period. For the waiting period, you do not have to register and you do not have to be added to any list, either. It is calculated by the university upon your application.
However, if you studied at a German university, this time does not count as a waiting period.
