Abstract

The gas-phase thermolysis of 3,4,5,6-tetrachloro-closo-1,2- diphosphahexaborane at .gtoreq.1200 K gave B4Cl4 with loss of P2 as studied by UPS. This loss of the octahedron edge to a tetrahedron is unexpected. This process is discussed hypersurface of the formation enthalpy calcd. by MNDO. The activation barrier is .apprx.300 kJ mol-1 which agrees with the temp. necessary for pyrolysis.
