Abstract

Digestate occurring during the fermentation of biomass has high water content. Due to the high water content it is not economically justified to transport the digestate over longer distances. Reducing water content by drying is an option to reduce volume. During drying the digestate emits volatile compounds which are not yet known in quantity. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the loss of nitrogen during drying. Drying was performed in a hybrid solar/waste-heat dryer. The volatile compounds were measured with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. With the investigation a significant loss of nitrogen could be approved.
