H2NC.tplbond.N reacts with BCl3 at low temps. to give the complex H2NC.tplbond.NBCl3 (1) and the dimeric iminoborane [H2NC(Cl):NBCl2]2 (3), whereas Me2NC.tplbond.N and BCl3 yield mainly [Me2NC(Cl):NBCl2]2 (4). The cyanamide complex 1 and the iminoborane 3 release HCl when heated >100.degree., and the pyrolysis of 1 or 3 at 1000.degree. in the presence of NH3 gives BN. Promising results concerning resistance of graphite against oxidn. were obtained when graphite was covered with a layer of dissolved 3 and pyrolyzed under NH3 at 1000.degree. with addnl. heating in vacuo at 1350.degree..
