The organic cultivation of soybeans in Germany may have a lot of advantages. However, these cannot be exploited today - because of the inadequate adaptation of the crop to our climate.
This project therefore aims at improving the adaptation of soybean by breeding. Adaptation by breeding will assure that the increasing demand of soybeans for food and feed originating from organic farming can be met on a medium time-scale. If this is the case cultivation of soybeans can become an interesting alternative for organic farmers. This will be achieved by breeding of early ripening, day neutral, high yielding genotypes with high quality of seeds, low demands to temperature sums, chilling tolerance, weed tolerance, improved N2 fixation and adequate ripening.
