Calculation procedure for parking spaces

On campus, there are currently almost 1,700 parking spaces. According to the calculations of Office of Construction, however, there is only a need for 1,431 parking spots.

The calculation is performed in 2 steps: First, a basic need is calculated for the entire area. In a second step, public transport connections are taken into account. Depending on the quality of the connections, between 30% (excellent connections) and 100% (poor connections) of the basic need for parking spots are considered to represent the actual need.

Basic need for universities:

 - Universities: 1 spot per 2-4 students
 - Vocational school buildings (Gardening School): 1 spot per 4 students over 18 years
 - Food outlets (Denkbar, Speisemeisterei): 1 spot per 12 m² effective area
 - Sales outlets (Wittwer, Copy Shop): 1 spot per 50 m² effective area

The University's need for parking spots is not calculated separately for each building but as a lump sum for the entire campus.

Assessment of public transport connections:
0-3 points are awarded in 4 categories (3 = best value). Based on that assessment, the University of Hohenheim's public transport connections are considered excellent:

 - Density: More than 3 lines (= 3 points)
 - Accessibility: Stop within a 300m radius (= 3 points)
 - Performance: At least every 10 min. (= 2 points)
 - Attractiveness: performance transportation = city railway (= 3 points)

11 points => 40% of the basic value is used as the actual need for parking spaces on the Hohenheim campus.
According to the current Parking Spaces Ordinance, this results in 1,431 parking spaces.
