EuroLeague of Life Sciences Universities (ELLS)

The University of Hohenheim has joined forces with ten European and two international universities to form the EuroLeague of Life Sciences Universities (ELLS).

Founded in 2001, ELLS is a strategic alliance of leading European universities in the field of life sciences and sustainable agrifood systems.

Objectives and commitment

Together, the partners want to promote the mobility of students and doctoral candidates, further develop their range of courses, and facilitate research cooperation.

Representatives of the University of Hohenheim are involved in all ELLS governing bodies, in the ELLS Student Association (ELSA), and in the ELLS subject areas, support teams, and working groups.

Current topics

  • ELLS invites you to the next Scientific Student Conference (SSC) in Montpellier, France (6–7 November 2026)
Join around 250 students from ELLS partners and present your Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis, share your research results, and build an international network with fellow students from all over Europe. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to socialize, learn new things, and present your work on an international level!
  • In 2026, the ELLS will celebrate its 25th anniversary
It was launched in 2001 by a small group of European universities in response to the Bologna Process. The partners wanted to work together in teaching and promoting student mobility. In the 25 years of its existence, the ELLS has developed into a fully-fledged European University Alliance. The University of Hohenheim will celebrate the ELLS anniversary with several activities at its Dies Academicus on 3 July 2026.
  •   The University of Hohenheim will chair ELLS from 2026 to 2027
President Prof. Dr. Christoph Schneider will help shape the strategy as chairperson of the ELLS Board and represent the alliance externally. In addition, the ELLS office will be located at the University of Hohenheim during this period. We look forward to making our contribution to the further development of ELLS!
  • At the beginning of 2026, the ELLS universities took the next step and submitted another application to the European Universities Initiative
The goal: To become Europe’s leading academic reference point for the sustainable transformation of agricultural and food systems. In 2024, they have already received the Seal of Excellence from the European Commission for their SUSTAIN-LIFE application project
