Short and sweet

I am passionate about teaching…

“I find it an exciting challenge to look for and find ways of presenting and communicating information that make the material more accessible to students. Ideally I can at least generate interest and perhaps even enthusiasm for my subject.”

The teaching project allows students to…

“… to get an idea of how organs are actually structured and their physiology, even without the opportunity to perform anatomic dissections themselves. Because this is asynchronous material and is offered for self-study, it also encourages the development of independent learning skills.”

My role in the teaching project…

“Concept, technical design and practical implementation. Of course with the support of the Digital Coaches and very dedicated student assistants.”

My goal…

“To make it easier for students to understand the interactions between the individual anatomical structures and how they work together during a physiological process, such as when a calf is suckling. To do this using audiovisual media showing live animals and laboratory specimens.”

Teaching project

Idea generation:

Students have repeatedly expressed the desire for practical demonstration lessons with animals or specimens, or for practical laboratory exercises. But as this is not part of the agricultural sciences curriculum, videos were an obvious choice. We gained our first experience with teaching videos during the Covid pandemic – for which we received positive feedback from the students. The DeLLFi project gave us the opportunity to build on this experience to create more advanced educational videos in terms of the technology and content.

Project objective:

The aim was to supplement the students’ purely theoretical education with appropriate visual material to make the farm animals’ anatomy and physiology clearer and easier to understand. Besides improving subject-related expertise, the videos encourage the development of independent learning skills. Once the new material has been created, it can be used again for subsequent classes and other modules in higher semesters. This creates sustainable resources for teaching and opens up possibilities for lecturers.

Current status / further steps / feedback / further development:

The project is completed. The videos were well received by the students, who mostly gave them a positive rating.
A next step would be to integrate interactive elements in the videos with an accompanying learning objective assessment. It would also be possible and useful to add further functional aspects to the educational videos.

Discussion and synergies

What teaching concept do you find inspiring, what teaching concept would you like to try?

Concepts in which transfer services are required, that enrich face-to-face teaching for everyone.

Review and outlook

When you look back on the project support, what was particularly helpful for you?

The technical support and expertise of the Digital Coaches while recording the videos and editing the material.

What tip would you give to people who are interested in support?

Making educational videos is great fun and, with the right support, it’s easier than you might think.
