Stop 22: Militärstraße

The Militärstraße, or military row, was a military fortification for Hohenheim Palace. It was built in the 1770s. Made up of 16 buildings, it housed Duke Carl Eugen's army of personal guards.

In the middle of the street, a gate building stood between two guardhouses; at the ends were roundabouts with a stone pyramid as the focal point.

Three of the four western buildings are historical; the fourth was re-built in historical form. The four eastern houses were re-designed in 1989 based on the original sizes.

Today, the buildings in the former Militärstraße are used by the University of Hohenheim and house institutes, research and meeting points, and apartments.
