Stop 1: Introducing Hohenheim

The historical tour, a relaxing walk through the former Palace grounds - today’s University campus - offers interesting sites for visitors. The stops illuminate the history of Hohenheim and the tasks of the teaching and research institution using examples.

Hohenheim’s history starts with a castle from the Middle Ages. At the end of the 13th century, a village settlement of the same name was documented. The castle developed into an estate which gave rise to a Renaissance water castle.

Today’s Baroque Palace is the work of Duke Carl Eugen from the end of the 18th century. The promenades extending out from the Palace have lost their organizing and influencing function, however.

When the Agricultural Teaching and Model Institute Hohenheim was founded by King William I and his wife Catherine in 1818, the history of the university beings: it obtained the right to award doctorates and habilitations in 1918/19, and in 1967 it was elevated to the status of a full university. In 1993, around 6,000 students studied in five faculties in Hohenheim.
