Teaching contract

The University may issue teaching contracts to supplement the range of courses offered. The assistant lecturers perform the teaching tasks assigned to them independently (§ 56 State Higher Education Act (Landeshochschulgesetz)).

Requirements

According to § 56 LHG, assistant lecturers must fulfill at least the following requirements:

  • A completed university degree
  • Pedagogical aptitude (proof through experience in teaching/training or through participation in further and advanced training in university didactics)

or

  • Proof of outstanding subject-related achievements in professional, academic, or artistic practice and pedagogical aptitude

Important: Teaching contracts must not be awarded to members of your own university.

Application procedure

The persons to be contracted are to be reported directly to the Human Resources Department (Civil Servants/Travel Expenses Unit) via the Dean's Office or via the Language Center by email. The teaching contract is issued by the Civil Servants/Travel Expenses Unit by means of an administrative act. This applies even if no remuneration is envisaged.

Remuneration

Teaching contracts must be remunerated in accordance with § 56(1) sentence 3 LHG unless the lecturer expressly waives remuneration. The remuneration is based on the UVergVwV (link), the maximum remuneration rates are regulated in number 3.3 of the UVergVwV.

Final examinations (e.g. state examinations) are not part of teaching and can be remunerated separately in accordance with the PrüfVergVwV (link).

When setting the level of remuneration, the following aspects must be taken into account in each individual case:

  • Type of course
  • Content of course
  • Preparation and follow-up work for the course
  • Training and qualifications of the assistant lecturer
  • Local circumstances
  • Importance of the course in the context of the examination regulations
  • Interest in recruiting the assistant lecturer.

Teaching contracts are only remunerated for the hours taught. Course hours that have been missed and are not made up during the semester will not be remunerated. There is no remuneration for the preparation and follow-up of lessons.

Important: A teaching contract can only be remunerated after the course
has been successfully completed.

Travel expenses

The reimbursement of travel expenses in the context of teaching contracts is governed by Sections 2.5.1 to 2.5.3 UVergVwV in corresponding application of the provisions of the State Travel Expenses Act (LRKG).

Travel expenses may only be reimbursed if

  • it is a secondary activity as envisaged by the LNTVO or the HNTVO or
  • assistant lecturers are self-employed or employed in another gainful occupation as their main occupation and if they earn an income from it
  • assistant lecturers are not gainfully employed in their main occupation or do not earn any income from this and the teaching contract is carried out outside their place of residence.

Invoicing

Assistant lecturers should send the following forms to the Language Center or the department that applied for the teaching contract:

  • Declaration on implementation of a teaching contract
  • Request for a teaching contract to be remunerated
  • If applicable, request for reimbursement of travel expenses

The receiving office prepares a payment authorization and forwards it to the Finance Department (Finance and Transactions Unit).
