University of Hohenheim ranks among the top third of universities worldwide in Business & Economics and Life Sciences / among the top 16 percent in the world in overall ranking
The University of Hohenheim is small and highly specialized – and it holds its own against large comprehensive universities: Both in Business and Economics and in the Life Sciences, the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart is one of the world’s best 251–300 universities. This is shown by the THE World University Rankings by Subject published by the journal "Times Higher Education" (THE) on 26 October 2023. In the recently published overall THE World University Rankings, the University of Hohenheim was also ranked #251-300 out of 1,904 universities worldwide, and thus in the top 16 percent. With a group ranking of #251–300 in both areas, the University of Hohenheim is in the top third of the 909 (Business and Economics) and 1,059 (Life Sciences) universities ranked.
According to the THE Ranking, the life sciences include agricultural and forestry sciences, biology, veterinary medicine, and sports science. Business and economics includes business administration and corporate management, finance, economics, and econometrics.
Bioeconomy combines business, economics, and life sciences
At the University of Hohenheim, the two areas are linked by a common guiding theme: bioeconomy. The goal is to create a sustainable concept for a future-proof economy that conserves energy and resources.
Research and teaching can only contribute to this if they take into account the interplay of economic, ecological, social, ethical, and legal aspects. Renowned rankings confirm top position agriculture, nutrition, and food sciences
In addition to the THE ranking, a number of international rankings were published this year that assess the top position of individual subjects. These once again see the University of Hohenheim as Germany's no. 1 in agricultural sciences, nutrition, and food science.
In March 2023, the influential QS World University Ranking by Subject listed the University of Hohenheim’s agricultural research including food science 1st in Germany, 9th in Europe, and 19th worldwide. The analysis by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, a British education provider, annually ranks the best universities primarily by research strength and examines factors such as academic reputation, publications, and citations of individual publications.
In September 2023, the renowned NTU Ranking of the National Taiwan University placed the University of Hohenheim in 1st place in Germany, 16th place in Europe, and 52nd place in the world in the field of agricultural research and food sciences . Each year, the NTU evaluates all international scientific publications for the globally respected ranking, assessing their number and quality.
The most recent Best Global Universities Ranking 2023 placed the University of Hohenheim’s agricultural research including food and nutrition science 1st in Germany, 9th in Europe, and 39th in the world in November 2022. The subject ranking of the U.S. News & World Report magazine is based on the analysis of Clarivate and takes into account research performance and international reputation.
BACKGROUND: Times Higher Education (THE) Ranking by Subject
The Times Higher Education Ranking (THE) by Subject 2024 includes 909 universities worldwidein the field of business and economics and 1,059 in life sciences. Various areas are included in the evaluation and weighted differently: Teaching (business and economics 30.4% / life sciences 26.8%), research (31.6% / 26.5%), scientific citations (25% / 35.2%), international orientation (9% / 7.5%), and third-party funding from industry (4% for both). Only universities with at least 1,000 publications in the relevant subject area in the last five years are considered in the ranking by subject. In addition, at least 5% or at least 50 people from the academic staff must work in the respective area.
