Museums in Hohenheim

The German Agricultural Museum (DLM) Hohenheim is a national, interdisciplinary institution. Its goal is to provide the public with comprehensive information about all areas of agriculture and its services to the environment and society. The museum concept includes the scientific elaboration of the history of production and documents the continual changes in agricultural history as well as their causes and interrelationships.

The Museum of the History of Hohenheim is located at the entrance of the Exotic Gardens in the restored rooms of the Spielhaus building. It illustrates over 900 years of Hohenheim’s eventful past. It also sheds light on the historical development of the university: from the beginnings of the Agricultural Institute in 1818 to today’s University of Hohenheim with three faculties and almost 10,000 students.

Hohenheim Gardens

The Hohenheim Gardens are a central scientific institution at the University of Hohenheim. Historically, the Hohenheim Gardens emerged from the State Arboretum of Baden-Württemberg and the Botanical Garden.

The public areas are open year-round and free of charge, and the Collection Greenhouse is open on request. Guided tours can be booked by appointment. Upon request and after a consultation, members of the institutes of the University of Hohenheim and the State Horticultural School may receive plant material for illustrative and experimental purposes in teaching and research, or conduct courses or experiments on site in the gardens.

The Core Facility Hohenheim (CFH) is a central service institution and technology platform for the University of Hohenheim and views itself as a partner for processing complex analytical questions in cutting-edge research.

Module 1: Mass spectrometry

The module provides state-of-the-art instrumentation for metabolite and protein identification and characterization, as well as quantitative metabolomic and proteomic analyses.

Module 2: Spectroscopy

NMR spectroscopy is an established method in chemical analysis. It is versatile and is used for the structural determination of pure substances and for the identification and quantification of metabolites in mixtures. In addition to measuring samples in the liquid phase, it is possible to examine samples in a highly viscous, gel-like state (HR-MAS). Three devices from 300 MHz to 600 MHz are available for this purpose.

Module 3: Analytical chemistry

The module offers a broad and validated range of methods in the analysis of plants, feed, food, fertilizers, soil, compost, and water. The comprehensive service ranges from competent and expert advice on the selection of the appropriate parameter for the experiment and a suitable analysis method to the joint further or new development of innovative analysis procedures.

Module 4: Data & statistical consulting

The Data & Statistical Consulting module (DSC) provides advice on statistical econometric issues in the context of empirical research projects.

The module staff maintains the Hohenheim Data Laboratory (DALAHO) and the associated database accesses. Likewise, the DSC offers advice on obtaining and processing economic and social science data outside of DALAHO. User training for statistical analysis programs (e.g., R or STATA) is offered on request. An appointment for an individual initial consultation can be made at any time.

Data management and bioinformatics

The Core Facility provides data storage and exchange for both experimentally generated raw data and metadata. It also provides support and advice to users in planning, executing, and evaluating complex bioinformatics problems and in defining experimental designs.

State institutes (Landesanstalten)

The University of Hohenheim operates three state institutes jointly with the state of Baden-Württemberg. They maintain their own infrastructure for their research. In addition, the state institutes devote themselves specifically to practice-oriented tasks such as consulting and research transfer.

The state institutes located on the Hohenheim campus serve as transmission belts from university research to applied practice by taking on tasks of public consulting and research transfer in addition to their own research. They are jointly operated by the state of Baden-Württemberg and the university and are fully integrated into university operations.

State Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioenergy

The state institute sees itself as a link between university research and agricultural practice.

Apicultural State Institute

With its research, the Apicultural State Institute creates the indispensable scientific basis for solving current problems of beekeeping in the state.

The research results are put into practice in close cooperation with the state expert advisory service and the beekeepers’ associations.

State Plant Breeding Institute

The State Plant Breeding Institute (LSA) is a university institution for research and development (R&D) in the field of plant breeding.

The tasks to be fulfilled by the LSA are based on the social requirements of resource-conserving, environmentally-friendly, and market-oriented agricultural crop production.

Transfer centers for food science and biotechnology

The Institute of Food Science and Biotechnology stands for outstanding research in the area of processing plant and animal products into edible, high quality, and healthy food, nutritional supplements, and functional active ingredients.

Dairy Transfer Center

The Dairy Transfer Center (TZM) is a contact and service provider for milk processing companies and their suppliers. To promote the transfer of scientific findings into practice, it combines the expertise of the Department of Dairy Science and Dairy Technology at the University of Hohenheim (Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jörg Hinrichs) and the Baden-Württemberg Agricultural Center for Cattle Husbandry, Grassland Management, Dairy, Game and Fisheries (LAZBW) in Wangen.

Transfer Center Meat / Meat Analogs

The Transfer Center Meat / Meat Analogs (TZF) is a contact and service provider for meat and meat analog processing companies and their suppliers. To promote the transfer of scientific findings into practice, it bundles the expertise of the Department of Food Material Science at the University of Hohenheim (Prof. Dr. Jochen Weiss).

Research offices and competence centers

Competence centers and research centers are dedicated to specific research questions and pool the respective expertise. They are linked in an interdisciplinary way within the University or with external cooperation partners.

Research Center for Cooperatives

The Research Center for Cooperative Studies deals with issues related to cooperatives in an interdisciplinary manner and has many years of consulting experience in this field.

Cooperatives from all sectors will find basic insights, information, and concrete recommendations for action to solve strategic challenges.

Gambling Research Center

The Gambling Research Center is a scientific institution of the University of Hohenheim founded in 2004.

It regularly publishes policy, legal, and academic information on gambling and organizes annual meetings for various actors with ties to gambling issues.

ZÖLUH – Center for Organic Farming at the University of Hohenheim

The goal of ZÖLUH (Center for Organic Farming at the University of Hohenheim) is to bring together science and practice in order to further develop organic farming together.

The core tasks of the center include initiating, coordinating, and implementing research projects, teaching on organic agriculture, and knowledge transfer in dialogue with the organic sector.

Kombiota – Competence Center for Biodiversity and Integrative Taxonomy

KomBioTa brings together the strengths of the University of Hohenheim and the Stuttgart Museum of Natural Science in research and teaching. Its establishment in 2019 is part of the Baden-Württemberg state initiative “Integrative Taxonomy.”

KomBioTa will involve other stakeholders as a research and communication network to pool and disseminate scientific expertise in the field of integrative taxonomy.
