THE World University Ranking 2023:
University of Hohenheim remains one of the best 250 universities worldwide  [17.10.22]

University of Hohenheim continues to be in the league of the world's best 14 percent, mainly due to its high level of research / Still No. 1 in Agricultural Science and Food Science

Small and excellent: The University of Hohenheim is among the 14 percent of the world's best universities in the current World University Ranking. The British magazine “Times Higher Education” (THE) published this annual ranking on 12 October 2022. Nearly 1,800 top universities from 104 countries were ranked this year. It is an evaluation of the entire university. The University of Hohenheim’s research influence plays a significant role, measured by the particularly high number of scientific citations. In this criterion it ranks 87th worldwide. In contrast, the THE ranking did not consider special research strengths, such as agricultural and food sciences. In this area, three separate rankings placed the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart as no. 1 in Germany and among the top ten in Europe. See details at www.uni-hohenheim.de/en/rankings


The current THE World University Ranking placed the University of Hohenheim in the class of the world’s best 201 to 250 universities. The THE ranking does not show an exact placement. In a nationwide comparison, the University of Hohenheim is in 23rd place together with three other universities in the same ranking group - out of a total of 108 universities in Germany. This means that it retains its position in the top quarter of German universities. Only 51 German universities made it into the ranking.


No. 1 in agricultural research & food science

The leading position of the University of Hohenheim in Germany has recently been confirmed by all the well-known international rankings:

  • The current Best Global Universities Ranking 2022 places the University of Hohenheim’s agricultural research including food and nutrition science 1st in Germany, 7th in Europe, and 34th in the world. The subject ranking of the U.S. News & World Report magazine is based on the analysis of Clarivate Analytics InCites and takes into account research performance and international reputation. It was published in November 2021.

  • The renowned research ranking of the National Taiwan University (NTU Ranking) listed the university as no. 1 in Germany, no. 8 in Europe, and no. 27 in the world. Each year, the NTU evaluates all international scientific publications for the globally respected ranking, assessing their number and quality. The latest issue was published in September 2021.

  • The influential QS World University Ranking by Subject lists the University of Hohenheim’s agricultural research including food science 1st in Germany, 8th in Europe, and 19th worldwide. The analysis by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, a British education provider, annually ranks the best universities primarily by research strength and examines factors such as academic reputation, publications, and citations of individual publications. The most recent subject ranking was published in April 2022.

For 2023, the Times Higher Education World University Ranking ranked the 1,799 best universities in the world according to their strengths in research (30%), teaching (30%), scientific citations (30%), internationalization (7.5%), and external funding from the private sector (2.5%). The THE ranking is based on statistical and bibliometric data in Elsevier’s Scopus database and on a worldwide survey of scientists
