900,000 Euros Initial Capital for Project to Ensure Stable Yields in Plant Cultivation [22.02.17]
Research consortium under University of Hohenheim leadership receives funding from the state program “Regional Research Alliances” / Project partners: University of Tübingen and the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology in Tübingen
Climate change has placed breeders under time pressure worldwide: For decades, crop plants were streamlined for maximum yield. However, the elite lines are less able to adapt to changing environmental conditions and have lost genetic diversity. Keeping crop yields stable in the future despite increasing occurrences of extreme weather events is the objective of a new research alliance that is interdisciplinary and cross-institutional under University of Hohenheim leadership. The participating scientists want to systematically use technological developments from the area of molecular sciences in practical breeding processes for the first time. With a sum of 900,000 euros, the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts (MWK) is supporting the newly founded research network. As project partners, the Universities of Hohenheim and Tübingen as well as the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology in Tübingen are also contributing around 900,000 euros from their own funds.
