In natural waters, EDTA in the form of differently protonated Fe(III) complexes can be transformed by the photochem. reactions. These reactionscan be relatively effective in rivers in Central Europe during the summer season. In winter, the transformation times become so long that most of the Fe EDTA will reach the sea. If the quantum yield of Fe EDTA complex, its optical absorption, the optical transmission of natural water, and the solar irradiance are known, the rate of photochem. transformation can be calcd.
