Abstract

In Europe, agro-environmental and rural policies aim atfostering economic, ecological and social development ofrural areas by private and public interventions. Determina-tion of objectives, design of new policies and monitoring andevaluation of existing policies are made in a continuousiterative process based on information about hypotheticaland observed impacts. This special issue of the Journal onAgriculture, Ecosystems and Environment is dedicated totools and methods that examine the multiple functions ofagriculture and their interdependencies, in order to supportinformed political decision-making.
