Abstract

The effect of three diets (bran mixture, brewer's grain mixture and industrially produced compound feed) on profitability of rabbit production was studied at the breeding station of the GTZ-ONERA-Rabbit production project in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso from January 1986 to March 1987. Data on reproduction and growing performance of 173 does and 1237 growing rabbits wee available for analysis. Compound feed was superior for number of pubs weaned, weaning weight and amount of feed used and resulted in 34.3 kg live-weight produced per doe cage and year. The final weight of growing animals was influenced by season and the quality of bran and brewer's grain mixtures. However, economic analysis showed that gross margin per doe cage and year was highest for animals fed with bran (FCFA 7072; FCFA: currency of the Entente States of West Africa. FCFA = FF50)., followed by compound feed (FCFA 6889). Animal fed brewer's grain per doe cage and year achieved the lowest final weight (26.5 kg) and the lowest gross margins (FCFA 5762). However, if not pelleted, bran and brewer's grain mixtures were superior to compound feed even if considering the feed wastage. It is concluded that rabbit production in Burkina Faso could be based on bran and brewer's grain mixtures but these should be un-pelleted. Final fattening with compound feed is not profitable when the number of fattening cages is limited.
