Abstract

<p><span style="font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 11pt; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA;">Cereals provide 30 to 80% of the crude protein and amino acid requirements in pig and poultry diets but information on the protein value in currently available cereal types and cultivars is lacking. Present feed evaluation systems for pigs and poultry are based on ileal crude protein and amino acid digestibility, but <i>in vivo </i>ileal digestibility experiments are time consuming, labour intensive, expensive, and require the use of surgically modified animals for collection of ileal digesta. Thus, the feed industry would most likely benefit from an evaluation system that could provide a rapid and accurate measure of ileal crude protein and amino acid digestibility in individual batches of cereals used for feed manufacturing. In principle, the <i>in vitro </i>method by (1) has been proven to be suitable for predicting ileal crude protein and amino acid digestibility from <i>in vitro </i>undigested dry matter (UDM) and <i>in vitro </i>nitrogen (N) digestibility in pigs. Therefore, this study aimed to assay a large variety of cereal types and cultivars for <i>in vitro </i>N digestibility and their <i>in vitro </i>UDM. </span></p>
