Abstract

An experimental system has been developed for the continuous gravimetric measurement of moisture sorption isotherms. Samples can be subjected to stepwise increase/decrease of relative humidity within the range of 10 and 90%, for any temperature between 10 and 70 °C. Air is circulated through and around the product to enhance the interchange rate at the air-water interface. Different herbs such as leaves (Melissa officinalis L.), flowers (Matricaria chamomilla L.) and roots (Valeriana officinalis L.) were used as test material. The technique was compared to the standard, static gravimetric method and dynamic vapor sorption in terms of accuracy, equilibration time and equilibrium moisture content.
