Cooperative documentation systems have been developed in healthcare to support cooperation between different professionals. However, the systems have been developed on an intuitive basis which means that occurring communication problems can pose a serious threat to smooth and effective cooperation. This paper considers the question how a Language-Action Perspective can help in the development of cooperative documentation systems. An approach is presented that is solidly grounded in linguistic and social theory and based on empirical investigations of communication patterns in multidisciplinary healthcare in order to avoid breakdowns in communication and cooperation. Thus, systems are made possible that are both usable by and useful for all professionals involved in multiprofessional tasks.
