So far insufficient research has been conducted in the field of pyrolysis of plastic materials. A staged pyrolysis process has several advantages compared to other possible approaches for waste treatment. It can produce several usable products from solid waste streams (H2, CH4, CO, liquid fuels, fertilizers, activated carbon). The technology is environmental friendly with low net emissions of CH4, CO2, SO2, NOx, HAP's, VOC's (Gerwig and Hegg, 1995). It can be integrated into microturbine, fuel cell or thermophotovolaic (TPV) systems for power generation. The appraoch is highly innovative and directly focuses on alternatives preventing the problems resulting from open burning of MSW (municipal solid waste) and landfill fires that emit 10.000 grams of dioxins/fuans into Mumbai's lower atmosphere every year (NEERI 2010).
The partners in this cooperation complement each other in scientific appraoch, methodical and technical procedures and dissemination strategies for biomass and plastic waste treatment. The concerted action in developing the existing pyrolysis systems further to cost-efficient applicable solutions opens to all stakeholders a wide variety in knowledge and expereience gain.
