Hohenheim Graduate School of Life Sciences

Doctoral candidates accepted at the Faculties of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Sciences can deepen their knowledge in the subject and in methodology while writing their dissertation as part of the “Hohenheim Graduate School of Life Sciences.” While participating in the doctoral study program, doctoral candidates receive structured support in preparing their dissertation. Upon completion of the doctorate, the university awards a certificate for successful participation in the doctoral study program. This certifies the qualifications acquired and provides an excellent basis for a further career in science or business:

  • In-depth specialist knowledge, skills, and methods of modern natural sciences research and scientific work 
  • Training focused on research and high-quality research contributions

Study contents

As part of the “Hohenheim Graduate School of Life Sciences,” doctoral candidates can enroll in one of the research training groups on offer.

Currently this is:

  • Open cohort (interdisciplinary)

Further research training groups are currently being planned.
 

During the standard period of study of three years, examinations and coursework totaling 30 credits will be completed. These are divided into a compulsory area of 18 credits beyond the research training group, which includes, for example, an active conference visit, and a research study group-specific elective area. In the elective area, students select and complete modules worth 12 credits on the doctoral subject from the range of modules on offer within the framework of their chosen research training group.

Area A 

12 credits max.

  • Offer of the Graduate Academy (e.g. presentation workshop, defense tool kit, scientific writing)
  • Research data management
  • Basics of scientific working according to the Nagoya Protocol
  • University didactics (HDZ)
  • Academic English (6 ECTS max.)
  • German for international doctoral candidates (at least level B2, preferably C1 – 6 ECTS max.)

Area B 

At least 6 credits 

Active participation in at least one international conference is mandatory.

3 credits for each active participation

Annual Retreat of the HGL (organized by the participants of the doctoral study program; topical sub-symposia of the research training groups are welcome)

Subject-specific Components (12 credits)

Research Training Groups lay down the curriculum in their specific regulations.

Study objectives

The goal of the doctoral study program is to assist doctoral candidates in the Faculties of Agricultural Science and Natural Sciences in preparing their dissertation in a structured manner and also aims to convey in-depth knowledge, skills, and methods in the subject area at the cutting edge of natural science research and scientific working methods.

The “Hohenheim Graduate School of Life Sciences” actively integrates doctoral candidates into the university's everyday research and teaching activities and offers excellent opportunities for networking and specialization.
