Habilitation (post-doctoral lecturing qualification)

The Habilitation (post-doctoral lecturing qualification) is the recognition of exceptional ability for research and teaching in a specific field. It is only possible to complete a Habilitation in fields represented at the University of Hohenheim and in which the University has the right to confer doctoral qualifications.

On obtaining the Habilitation, you have the authorisation to lecture (venia legendi) in a specific field. Completing post-doctoral studies confers the title of “private lecturer” (Privatdozent) on a person and means that the individual has an obligation to provide two hours/week of lectures per term within the faculty.

Habilitation procedure

All decisions regarding post-doctoral lecturing qualifications are made by the so-called Habilitation Commission, which comprises University professors and private lecturers from the faculty board and professors from the relevant faculty.
