Campus life

Studying is not only made up of books but also of student involvement and participation in student life. Hohenheim’s many groups and programs make it possible to gain new experience and make friends. Because of the compact campus, it is easy to combine studies and hobbies.

AStA

AStA (the student union or Allgemeiner Studierendenausschuss) is an organization made up of dedicated students who stand up for the interests of all students at the University. AStA represents students vis-a-vis the Student Services and University, manages funding and organizes events and campaigns.

In addition, in state-wide committees such as the State Student Representative Body, AStA holds discussions and negotiations to represent the interests of the University of Hohenheim students.

AStA is elected once per year by the Student Parliament (StuPa) and currently has nine members. Non-elected members also take on tasks and are in charge of topics. If you want to actively shape life at the University and organize projects, this is the right place for you.

Fachschaften (Students' representative bodies)

Each degree program has a Fachschaft with the goal of actively shaping the degree program and University life. The Fachschaft members are students and act as representatives and points of contact within their Faculty.

Fachschaften are information forums and contact the departments if there are suggestions or problems. The Fachschaften also offer a chance to get involved in political life at the University. They try to improve students’ everyday life at the University and offer assistance to new students. Among other events, they organize the information sessions at the start of the semester. The Fachschaften also act as contacts for lecturers or the administration if they need students’ opinions, for example. If you want to listen to both sides and mediate, then this is the right place for you.

Student groups

Student groups enrich campus life and reflect the many different interests of Hohenheim students. At the University of Hohenheim, there are more than 30 student groups that you can get involved in outside of the lectures. The groups focus on content ranging from cultural integration to political involvement.

Start-up garage and Student2Technology

The Start-up Garage Hohenheim is an innovative teaching method offered by the Department of Entrepreneurship. Its goal is to enable students to experience and apply entrepreneurship. They go through the entire process of starting a company, obtaining competences that could be relevant for starting their own company once they graduate.

The project Student2Technology connects those interested in starting their own companies with researchers so that good ideas can be turned into products. Students of all disciplines learn how to use innovative “start-up tools” to transform modern technologies into marketable business models.

Horads

As an officially licensed learning radio station, the Stuttgart university radio HORADS 88.6 gives universities in Stuttgart and Ludwigsburg the chance to get to know work at a radio station in the practice. It can be received in Stuttgart with 88.6 MHz and globally with live streaming and the RadioApp. HORADS 88.6 offers you a chance to try out radio journalism and expand your media skills. Together with around 100 students, each week you can design the radio program and broadcast live from the HORADS studio at the Hochschule der Medien (HdM).

University sports

For students, the University of Hohenheim offers a sports program: Ball sports and martial arts, fitness and relaxation courses, gymnastics, track and field, hang-gliding, sailing, hip-up, and jazz dance.

You can also try out and get to know new sports: that means you can check out exotic sports like hurling (Irish team sport), historical fencing (the art of fencing in the Middle Ages), headis (table tennis with your head), and lacrosse (national sport of Canada).

For University Sports, you only have to register for a semester and don’t need to sign any long-term contracts. Each semester, you can decide from among more than 40 types of sports and 80 courses. The entire program takes place close to campus, can be integrated into the semester breaks, and is inexpensive or free of charge. In the courses, you can also get to know new people from all subjects.

Thomas-Müntzer-Scheuer (TMS)

On Hohenheim’s campus, the Thomas-Müntzer-Scheuer (TMS) is the central student meeting point: Here there are cultural events, inexpensive coffee, and legendary student parties. Since 1975, the Hohenheim students have used the TMS as their refuge, student club, coffee meet-up, and cultural bar. The TMS is managed solely by students. Every Tuesday, the cultural group is responsible for the program and makes sure that it is very diverse. It brings in improv theater, poetry slams, and satire, organizes game and craft evenings or karaoke events. Thursday evenings are when the traditional TMS parties take place: Every week a different Fachschaft or student group hosts a party - an absolute must for new students.

Music and Theater

Baden-Württemberg’s most beautiful campus not only has excellent teaching, it also has various outstanding ensembles and a theater group.

If you are interested in music, then you will find many opportunities in Hohenheim. There are groups for those who love entertainment music as well as fans of “serious” music. Whether it’s the Recorder Ensemble, BigBand, Chor for more, Concert Band, Woodwind Ensemble, rock, pop, and jazz musicians, Symphony Orchestra, or the University Choir - there’s something for everyone!
