During studies

If you have been admitted and would like to start your studies at the University of Hohenheim, there is quite a bit that needs to be organized and planned.

In addition to general consideration on the living situation or how easily the university and lecture halls can be reached considering your special disability, practical study questions are also raised. What about examinations - and what possibilities are there for dealing with various disabilities?

Disabled and chronically ill students must complete the same tasks as non-disabled and healthy students. Because of strict formal and time regulations, they are often at a disadvantage because they cannot fulfill these requirements due to their disability or illness.

With a so-called affirmative action request, these disadvantages can be compensated, and the examination conditions can be individually adapted. This is about equal participation opportunities during studies and the avoidance of discrimination. An advantage may not arise in any case.

Some examples using the informational book “Studying with a disability” from the Information and Advising Office for Studying with a Disability (IBS) from the German Student Services (DSW):

  • Extended writing period for written examinations
  • Extension of time allowed for final papers
  • Allowance of the use of technical aids during the examination
  • Not considering punctuation and spelling errors in examinations (for dyslexia)

Some examples using the informational book “Studying with a disability” from the Information and Advising Office for Studying with a Disability (IBS) from the German Student Services (DSW):

  • nobody has a general right to affirmative action, nor does anyone have a right to a certain form of affirmative action. The examination committee will decide.
  • it can only be granted if the disability or illness results in provable limitations or disadvantages related to the examinations. That is why it is important to explain how the disability or illness affects studies. Therefore: Clearly describe the effects!
  • the effects must be reasoned and proven, and the proof is decisive. The following proof can be suitable:

    • Specialist medical certificate or evaluation
    • Evaluation from treating psychotherapist
    • Report of treatment from hospital
    • Severely disabled persons ID, etc.

  • Please submit the request as early as possible and include the Representative for Disabled Students and the Student Counselling Center!
  • Please note that people who are disabled are experts in their own disability or illness, and everyone else relies on their information because they likely do not have any experience with or knowledge of this area.
