Appointment Procedures

To fill a vacant professorship, the University will put out a call for applications.

  • Subject-area Focus
Before the application process, the respective faculty decides on the subject-area focus of the professorships together with the President (so-called function description or denomination). If the function description is changed, the Senate and University Council must be consulted. The changed function description is approved by the Ministry of Science if it has not already been approved in the structural and development plan.

  • Establishment of the Professorial Appointment Commission and Call for Applications
With the suggestion from the faculty, the President's office decides on the text of the call for applications and on the professorial appointment commission.

  • Selection Procedure
The Professorial Appointment Commission will evaluate the incoming applications. Typically, it will meet three times: (1) It will decide who will be invited to Hohenheim for lectures and interviews. (2) It will decide which candidates will be shortlisted and evaluated by external experts. (3) It suggests a list with three candidates to receive the offer for the professorship.

  • Appointment Negotiations and Acceptance of the Offer
Once the appointment list has been accepted by the Faculty Council, a statement by the Senate is requested. After the list has been approved by the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts, the professor will be offered an appointment. The University will lead the appointment negotiations on the professorship’s equipment. The procedure is completed when the offer has been accepted.
