Eligible for admission are applicants who meet all of the following entry requirements:

A Bachelor’s or equivalent degree completed at a domestic or foreign university that meets the following criteria:

  • program lasted a minimum of three years and awarded a minimum of 180 ECTS credits
  • program with a profile in the natural sciences or engineering.
Accepted are Bachelor’s degrees in:
  • food science and biotechnology
  • food technology
  • biology
  • biochemistry
  • biotechnology
  • bioprocess technology
  • chemistry
  • the Bachelor’s program in Ernährungswissenschaft of the University of Hohenheim

The selection committee may recognize further programs in the natural sciences or engineering as equal to those listed above.

Documented proof of good English language skills

Minimum level required is B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages

Step one

The first step of the selection procedure consists of a pre-selection on the basis of the documents submitted.

This pre-selection is based on the following criteria:

The final grade of the Bachelor’s degree or the grade point average of the examinations completed thus far.
Subject-specific coursework may be credited, if the respective modules award a minimum of 6 ECTS credits. The modules need to be from the following fields: physics, mathematics, physical chemistry, food chemistry, microbiology, engineering, process, and automatization technology.

Relevant vocational training, such as laboratory technician (natural sciences, medicine); technical assistant (natural sciences, medicine);

Completed vocational training in the food industry, chemical industry, pharmaceutical industry, or biotechnological industry;

Relevant work experience, such as a professional internship with a minimum duration of 3 months, or

A stay abroad at a university within the EU, Switzerland, USA, or Japan with a minimum duration of 3 months.

Based on this pre-selection, the 55 best applicants are selected to remain within the selection procedure. All other applicants are excluded from the continuing selection procedure.
 

Step two

In a second step, the remaining 55 applicants are invited to take part in a written aptitude test (or a Skype interview, see below). The aptitude test is designed to provide an additional individual assessment of each applicant’s suitability for the program in Food Biotechnology.

Literature recommendations for preparation for the aptitude test

The aptitude test for admission for the winter semester 2024/25 will take place on June, 14. Further information will be provided via e-mail during the application process.

Test procedure

The written test consists of questions at the Bachelor's level chosen from the fields of biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, and biotechnology, which are regarded as fundamental to this Master’s program. Each aptitude test comprises three questions from the four fields named above and lasts 60 minutes. Those sitting the aptitude test must provide valid personal identification to take part in the test.

If applicants have to travel a distance greater than 400km to attend the test, they may choose to do a 30 minute interview using Skype instead. This interview is the oral equivalent of the written test and thus consists of questions as describe above. Only applicants chosen during the pre-selection qualify for an interview.

All applicants scoring a minimum of 33% in the test remain within the selection procedure. All others are excluded from the continuing selection procedure.
 

Step three

In a third step, the selection committee creates a ranking of all remaining applicants on the basis of the documents submitted and the results of the aptitude test.

The following criteria are taken into consideration:

Final grade of the Bachelor’s degree or the grade point average of the examinations completed thus far (Weighting: 50%)
The results of the aptitude test (Weighting: 30%)
Subject-specific coursework may be credited, if the respective modules award a minimum of 6 ECTS credits. The modules need to be from the following fields: biotechnology, biochemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, food chemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, microbiology, process technology. (Weighting: 15%)

Relevant vocational training, such as laboratory technician (natural sciences, medicine); technical assistant (natural sciences, medicine);

Completed vocational training in the food industry, chemical industry, pharmaceutical industry, or biotechnological industry;

Relevant work experience, such as a professional internship with a minimum duration of 3 months;

A stay abroad at a university within the EU, Switzerland, USA, or Japan with a minimum duration of 3 months.

Final degree certificate and the transcript of records

including the average grade, of your undergraduate degree, which provides information on the contents of your previous study program.

If the average grade is not included in your transcript of records, the Registrar’s Office calculates the arithmetic average of all grades, which will serve as your average grade.

If no certificate is available, please submit a transcript of records covering all your examination results to date, including all grades and the average grade.

The final degree certificate must be submitted by 15 December at the latest for the winter semester for which admission has been granted.

Proof of English language proficiency

  • internet based TOEFL test with a minimum of 90 points
  • IELTS certificate with a minimum average of 6.5 point
  • UNIcert II certificate with a minimum grade of “good” If 50% of the coursework required for the UNIcert II certificate is completed until the application deadline has passed, you need to attach proof of this to the application for admission. The completed UNIcert II certificate is to be handed in before 1 October for the winter semester for which admission has been granted at the latest.
