Besser wär besser - GREEN  [08.04.24]

Green ideas, green figures, committed people who are making the campus more sustainable: For one semester, the Online Courier and Hohenheim's Instagram channel will be all about sustainability. Here you can find out how "Better would be better - GREEN" works and why now is the best time for it.

Who is actually ensuring that the University becomes more sustainable?

The politicians? The President's Office and the committees? Student groups? The energy manager? A new Green Office? Researchers & lecturers? The university administration? All of us in everyday life?

The truth is: No one can do it alone. But together we can make a difference. This semester, we want to find out how.

How "Better would be better - GREEN" works

For one semester, everything on the university channels will revolve around the topic of sustainability:

  • Ideas platform: At uni-hohenheim.de/green, employees and students can submit ideas of all kinds until mid-July to make the campus more sustainable. All entries will be checked, answered - and followed up if possible. For particularly good and practicable(!) ideas, the university director will possibly make money available. Of particular interest are concrete suggestions on how the university can save energy and CO2. Of course, the platform can also be used for other green ideas, tips or longer-term visions.
  • Greenfluencer: Every week in the Online Courier and on Instagram, we introduce people who are making a contribution to making the campus more sustainable. It doesn't matter whether they are small examples from everyday life or larger innovative projects. We want to make student commitment just as visible as people who are committed to sustainability as part of their work. We can all be greenfluencers!
  • Green figures: Info snacks and background information round off the semester of action. A "number of the week" will serve as a green thread, focusing on various aspects of sustainability: from biodiversity and energy to waste avoidance.

Save the date: To accompany our semester of action, a special edition of our event series "Hohenheim LIVE" is also planned for 17 June (11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.). Attention: This time not online, but in the TMS!

Part 1 of our Greenfluencer series: Arbeitskreis Nachhaltigkeit (AKN) - coming soon

Why now?

The timing couldn't be better. Because at the suggestion of students, the University of Hohenheim wants to set up a new Green Office in the summer semester. This is a permanent institution that bundles sustainability topics, makes them visible and promotes them together with committed students, employees and researchers.

This means that even when our campaign semester is over in mid-July, good sustainability ideas will continue to be pursued in the Green Office! Our ideas platform can be a launch pad for this.

More on the topic of "Green Office" soon in the Online Courier!

Disclaimer

There is one thing we do not want to conceal at the start of our campaign: Unfortunately, it's not always just a lack of good ideas. We would all like to see more photovoltaic systems on campus, an efficient heating system, more energy-efficient buildings or better public transport connections.

It's not that no one has ever thought of it before, but... sometimes things are complicated. The university is not responsible for all tasks (e.g. construction projects), sometimes the legal requirements are a real drag (e.g. photovoltaics) and for many things there is simply a lack of money or human resources.

We therefore want to use the semester to provide information about the most important background. After all, we can only really make a difference if we take note of reality and all its challenges.

Maybe it's all about the right mix? Just get started where you can. A long breath and a cool head where progress is not so easy. And maybe sometimes it's possible to think outside the box and pursue seemingly unattainable goals in a completely different way.

With this in mind: let's get on with it!
