CHE Ranking 2025:
Only best grades from students for food and biotechnology  [04.07.25]

Above-average satisfaction: Students rate Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs in Food Science and Biotechnology in the new CHE University Ranking.

“Lecturers who are passionate about their subject,” “modern laboratories,” “fair exams,” and “excellent support at the start of studies and during the course”: In the latest ranking by the Center for Higher Education Development (CHE), students at the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart award nothing but top marks. The Bachelor’s degree programs in Food Science and Biotechnology and the Master’s degree programs in Biotechnology, Food Science and Technology, Food Systems and Food Chemistry were evaluated. Other degree programs at the University of Hohenheim will only be ranked again by the CHE in subsequent years. The entire CHE University Ranking is available online at HeyStudium and partially in print in the ZEIT Study Guide. More at studiengaenge.zeit.de/ranking. Whether study organization, study support, IT equipment, or practical orientation: In 14 out of 15 categories, students of food science and biotechnology awarded 4 to 4.5 out of 5 possible stars each time. This means that this offering from the University of Hohenheim far outstrips the German average in these subjects.

The students only see room for improvement when it comes to study and work spaces. Here they award only 3.9 out of a possible 5 stars.

Students appreciate unique features

In their comments on the evaluation, students particularly appreciate the motivation of the teaching staff and some special features that make the University of Hohenheim unique in Germany.

“The motivation and enthusiasm is passed on to us students in many lectures, which is what makes studying at my university so great,” is one of these examples. Or to put it more succinctly: “Beautiful university with very good professors. Good learning atmosphere. Modern laboratories. Fair exams.”

From food from the 3D printer to meat-free substitute ham

“If students have any questions, they are answered or a tour of the Technical Center is organized spontaneously” is one of the comments referring to the excellent production facilities in addition to the laboratories. There, for example, food is produced using 3D printing or traditional as well as vegan meat and dairy (substitute) products. All modern food production processes are carried out on an industrial scale.

In order to offer its students a good start and a good course of study, the University of Hohenheim places its faith in tailor-made additional provision such as introductory events or special math courses. The “Studying with perspective” program offers events in all phases of the degree program, from time management to exam preparation.

Many different offerings such as small research projects, excursions, the integration of industrial internships, or laboratory practicals are also praised.”

BACKGROUND on the CHE Ranking

The CHE university ranking has been exclusively published in the ZEIT Studienführer and ZEIT ONLINE for twenty years. According to its own information, this is the most comprehensive university comparison in the German-speaking world with more than 10,000 degree programs at German universities. In addition to facts about studies, teaching, and research, it also assesses how students rate the practical relevance of their degree programs and career preparation measures.

Of the entire range of subjects at the University of Hohenheim, only some of the degree programs are re-ranked each year. The update takes place every three years. The majority of degree programs – such as those in agricultural sciences – are not ranked by CHE. The entire CHE University Ranking with around 120,000 students surveyed is available online at http://heystudium.de/ranking
