Abstract

Information an assets (land, Iivestock and labor force) possessed, worth of their produce, cash inflow from the sale of produce, cash costs of production was collected from 275 households in the union territory of Pondicherry through a survey in 1989. The households belonged to landless (LL), marginal farmer (MF, small farmer (SF) and bigger fanner (BF) categories, selected randomly in number proportional to the total number of households belonging to that category in each of the 10 purposefully selected villages. For the 4 categories of households, in the same order, the net worth of produce (worth minus cash costs) was, respectively, Rs 0, Rs 1824, Rs 7040 and Rs 26218 from land; Rs 6691, Rs 6172, Rs 3514 and Rs 6302 from Iivestock; and Rs 9827, Rs 7863, Rs 4151 and Rs 2884 from wage earning per household and year. Livestock were secondary to crop farming only in scale and not in importance in any household category. In LL and ML households nearly 4090 of the net worth of total produce was from Iivestock
