The new compd. Tl2Sn2S5 was prepd. by fusion of a stoichiometric mixt. of the elements followed by prolonged heating at 300.degree.. The compd. crystallizes in the monoclinic system in space group C2/c with a 1.115(2), b 7.723(1), c 1.492(2) .ANG., and .beta.108.60(1).degree., Z = 4. The Sn atoms are coordinated by five S atoms forming a considerably distorted trigonal bipyramid (mean distance Sn-S: 2.497 .ANG.). By common edges the SnS5 bipyramids are linked into chains extending in the [110] and [1.hivin.10] directions, resp. The chains are crosslinked by sharing the remaining equatorial vertices of the SnS5 bipyramids, thus forming a three-dimensional framework which is related to that described for Na4Sn3S8. The Tl atoms located in channels running parallel to the b axis are surrounded by nine S atoms. The Tl-S distances are 3.073-3.897 .ANG..
