Abstract

Anthracene in ethanol shows an unusual temp. dependence of the fluorescence quantum yield and lifetime: both fluorescence parameters pass through a max. at approx. 180 K but they follow the usual Arrhenius kinetic when anthracene is dissolved in 2-methylpentane or other hydrocarbons. In literature, several models of explanation have been presented but no decision has been made which may be the right one. The authors present new data about the temp.-dependent fluorescence properties and T1 population of anthracene in ethanol. On the basis of these data, they concluded that a modified kinetic scheme with a deactivating channel via an exciplex between excited anthracene and ethanol rationalizes the findings best.
