Abstract

This chapter describes why it is imperative for the economy as well as for the individual to counter the burnout syndrome by prevention. To establish a case for the preventive potentials and possible approaches of communication, the salutogenic concept—the close relationship between the burnout syndrome and the symptoms of stress—and the individual as well as the context-related course of the process will be described and explained in detail. The chapter closes with an urgent appeal to make an interdisciplinary effort (disciplines in the cognitive, psychological, and physiological areas) to analyze the burnout syndrome and derive prevention strategies from the results so that their effective and lasting success may be assured.
