Ti4P8S29 was prepd. by reaction of the elements at 400.degree.. Ti4P8S29 crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group C2/c with a 19.724(4), b 17.050(5), c 12.608(3).ANG., .beta. 95.52(2).degree., and Z = 4. Ti4P8S29 corresponds to Ti4+4([PS4]43-[P2S6]2-[P2S7]2-). The anion [PS4]3- is tetrahedral; [P2S6]2- is built up from 2 tetrahedral PS4 units joined together by a common edge. The novel anion [P2S7]2- can be derived from [P2S6]2- by replacing 1 of the bridging S atoms by a disulfide group. The Ti atoms are octahedrally coordinated to 6 S atoms.
