Abstract

Imported soybean meals (SBM) from 3 leading SBM producing countries (Argentina, Brazil, US; 6 batches each) were used in this study with piglets to determine the effect of SBM origin on standardised ileal digestibility (SID) of crude protein (CP) and amino acids (AA). Altogether, 36 barrows with an average initial body weight of 5.6 ± 0.68 kg were used in 3 consecutive experiments with 3 periods and 12 piglets each. The piglets were surgically fitted with simple T-cannulas at the distal ileum. Diets containing SBM from the 3 origins did not differ in average SID of CP, but there were small differences (P<0.05) for the SID of Arg, Ala and Asp with higher values in diets containing SBM from the US compared to Argentina. Moreover, there was greater variation in SID of CP and AA within diets containing SBM either from Argentina or Brazil rather than from the US. Thus, the individual batch of SBM has greater impact on SID of CP and AA than the origin of SBM.
