Beschreibung

The tsunami, which hit the region of Aceh on the December 26, 2004, inundated more than 150.000 ha of arable land with seawater, and spread oil, waste and sludge over farmers fields. At the same time, the agricultural faculty of the Syiah Kuala University (UNSYIAH) in Banda Aceh was severely damaged and lost approximately 80% of its research and teaching staff. The ACULTURE project is a collaborative action between three European and two Indonesian universities. It aims on assisting UNSYIAH in the (re-)establishment of human resources, curricula, systems and institutions relevant to the prevailing agricultural problems post tsunami. This will include the shared education of six graduate students and the development of curricula. Systems allowing for a close cooperation between researchers and farmers in the Aceh region will be established. The project will also assist researchers at UNSYIAH in the presentation of their experiences and research results to a broad international audience. The duration of the project will be 36 months.
