An economic evaluation of dairy production in the specialized system with Holstein cows and the dual-purpose system with the criollo cattle Reyna was carried out in Nicaragua. The gross margin of milk production in the specialized dairy system was higher than in the dual-purpose system. While land was economically better used with specialized dairy production, labour and capital in particular was used more economically in the dual-purpose system. Therefore the dual-purpose system with Reyna cattle is an appropriate milk production system for Nicaragua, because the allocation of capital is more difficult compared to other production factors. However, the variation of prices for milk, meat and concentrates, as well as the improvement of milk yield and calving interval has a great influence on the relative economic advantage of one production system against the other. Low milk prices in relation to meat and high prices for concentrates are favourable for the dual-purpose system, high milk prices and short calving intervals have a beneficial effect on the specialized production system.
